Marta Andrade interview at Spanish Nationals in Barcelona, December'01

Q: It's been years since the last Nationals in Barcelona. ....

Marta: Yes. As I remember, the last time this event held in Barcelona was more than ten years ago. I was 16 years old and now I am 29. After the remodeling we have a good rink and good ice. We'll see how everything goes.  After so many years it's important for everything to go well. Performing at your hometown rink is a responsibility, in both organizational and in athletic sense.

Q: Speaking of sport, what is your goal: to win only or you want give one  of those great performances to remember?

Marta: I'd like to do my best because I am at the rink where people know  me. It's a sport that you never know what to expect because it takes all in 4 minutes; I feel ready but never can say if it will go all right. There  are seven of us in ladies discipline. I don't know about  the skaters who are not from Barcelona but I think the competition will be on a high level.

Q: The Spanish Nationals is a very interesting event. Do you think this ice rink could hold an international competition in the future?

Marta: Well, it would be great but the competitions on national level seem to be more realistic. Holding an international event is more complicated: you must free the ice rink for a week, I am also not sure about the  rink's size... The inter-club competitions can be easier to realize.

Q: With those prospects, the figure skating future in the FC Barcelona may be brighter...

Marta: I'd like it very much. In fact, this year I  started working with a group of 10 children at figure skating school. It's a class of physical training. We now have some good junior skaters and I think that in coming years they will show positive results.

Q: The Winter sports are very popular in Catalonia, would the Spanish  figure skating be able to show a good potential on  the international level.

Marta: Yes, but the other countries are ahead of us. Countries like France or Italy are more advanced in it. However, we are getting to their level and this is a merit.

Q: You have an honor to be with Gloria Mas, the only woman from this club that participated in the Winter Olympic Games. What options do you have in  February at your 3rd Games and, by the way, continue to enlarge the club?

Marta: It's very difficult because there are only 30 persons to participate  and it's not as easy as it looks. You have to be a Spanish Champion but it  doesn't guarantee a place.  Spain is 34th in world  rankings  and only 30  skaters are going to compete: although, you win but  can't compete if 4  other countries don't withdraw. Besides, it also depends  on the Spanish Olympic  Committee because there is not much in a budget for the Winter Games.
